Training Our Own Leaders (TOOL)
The VOICE T.O.O.L - Training Our Own Leaders program is a leadership and volunteer training program designed to prepare high school students for service learning and employment opportunities. Acceptance into the program was a competitive process with the requirement that applicants complete an application which included 3 letters of reference and an official high school transcript. Applications were reviewed based on grades for the fall semester, personal references, leadership and volunteer experience, and responses to application questions. The selection process consisted of a review of the submitted information and the applicants were ranked based on the strength of their applications.
Program participants will be required to complete the following steps in order to be rewarded their scholarship:
Attend the initial Leadership/Volunteer Training session.
Attend 4 follow up sessions scheduled throughout the school year.
Participants will complete 50 hours of volunteer time within the community.
Volunteer time must be for an organized group, church, or agency and can not be for an individual.
At least 15 of the required volunteer hours will be the VOICE practicum.
Participants must maintain at least a B average combined for all classes and maintain good behavior throughout the school year.
The comprehensive program will consist of 5 training dates along with a required volunteer service practicum with VOICE and additional volunteer service for other community programs and agencies. Participants successfully completing all requirements of the program will earn a one time $500 scholarship awarded to their college to be used to help offset expenses for tuition and fees.
Master Scholars Program (MSP)
An extension of Corsicana Summer Freedom School, designed for students in High School and are no longer young enough to attend Freedom School. Provides training and guidance in areas such as college preparation, service learning, job readiness, and cultural diversity. Upon successful completion students are given the opportunity to work at Corsicana Summer Freedom School.
